There are three goals for the Lack of  Awareness LAS.  Goal one is to build awareness of the importance of coral reefs and teach and encourage positive behaviors that will protect and nurture them.  Goal two, promote understanding of the value of coral reefs locally.  Goal three, increase coral reef education for visitors through hotels, cruise ships etc.  The following projects were selected to address this goal.  Several projects have been funded and initiated.  Others have yet to be funded and offer potential for collaboration or additional initiatives. 

Funded Projects-Currently being implemented by Virgin Islands Division of Coastal Zone Management (VICZM)

• Snorkeling Excursion Program – Snorkeling clinic offered through Marine Park 

• STXEEMP Public Awareness Survey – funded

• Hire an Environmental Education Specialist – completed for years 2004-2006

• STXEEMP Maps and Signage – contracted to VI Resource Conservation and Development Council; in process 

• Integrate Coral Reef Education in Public/Private Schools - Efforts are currently underway to work with science teachers more extensively and provide more comprehensive coral reef curriculum through the Virgin Islands Network of Environmental Educators (VINE).

Priority future projects for the Marine Park (VICZM and/or collaborators)

• Re-establish the St. Croix Aquarium

• Product Development (videos and written materials) for Hotels

•  Product Development (guidelines and written materials) for Private Tour Operators 

• Develop STXEEMP Portable Kiosk

• Inventory Coral Reef Educational Resources 

•  Develop an Information Center – The Club Comanche sugar mill on Christiansted boardwalk is being renovated as an outreach and education information center.  Construction will begin in 2006.
