EEMP
Management Areas
The St. Croix East
End Marine Park is a multi-use park. There are four different
kinds of managed areas within its boundaries. These areas are
intended to ensure ecosystem-wide management of the park and to
accommodate many different types of users. The park is comprised
of Recreation Management Areas, Turtle Wildlife Preserve Area,
No-Take Areas and Open Areas. Please see our maps page for
additional information on our management areas.

Recreation Management Areas |
 |
|
|
These areas are designated for snorkeling,
diving, catch and release fishing, cast net
bait fishing and boating while preserving
basic resources. They include the areas of
Teague Bay, Smugglers Cove, Cotton Garden
Bay, Cramer's Park, and Turner Hole, and the
area within 100 feet of the shoreline.
Recreational line fishing from shore is
permitted within 100 feet of the shoreline.
These areas have been established to
minimize disturbance to marine life and
their habitats to ensure protection and
continuation of various marine species.

Turtle Wildlife Preserve
Area |
 |
|
|
This area serves to protect primary
turtle nesting beaches for Green,
Hawksbill and Leatherback turtles.
Although protected, these areas do
provide opportunities for public use.
You can use the beach but cannot have
cars, horses or fires on the shore.
Additional protection for turtles
feeding in the water, on their way to
and from the beaches and in the preserve
area is provided by a prohibition on the
use of gill and trammel nets in this
area and possible future speed or other
vessel restrictions.

|
No Take Areas |
 |
|
|
The No-Take Areas were established to
protect spawning, nursery, and residence
habitat for various species. Protection
and preservation of the habitats and
species within this area will help to
ensure that these marine resources are
available in the future. The no-take
areas were identified based upon their
status as important habitat, the level
of conflicting uses, and the amount of
visitor use. Swimming, diving, and
boating are allowed in these areas;
however, commercial and recreational
fishing are prohibited.
|
|
Open Areas |
 |
|
|
These areas comprise most of the park
(>80%), encompassing all areas that are
not otherwise delineated. Existing
territorial restrictions govern the use
of these areas; the only marine park
restriction is for the removal of coral
or live rock in these areas. These areas
are intended to assist resource managers
in evaluating the effectiveness of park
management activities. |
